"LANDLOCKED" Score for Jay Carlon Dance Performance

2020

LANDLOCKED: Notes/Reflections: Edited Transcription From Self Audio Recording By Alexander Kaye:

"This score was created for Jay Carlon's LANDLOCKED experimental dance performance in Bangkok Thailand, 2021. It was created with a mixture of modular synthesis, contact microphones, DC motors, wire, paper, pen, and Ableton software. I connected a contact microphone to the bottom of a piece of cardboard, then placed paper onto the cardboard facing upwards. I had a small DC motor suspended three to four feet above the paper with a loose wire attached to it and a pen attached to the bottom of the wire, making light contact with the paper.

As the DC motor spun, it created abnormal oscillatory patterns of the imbalanced pen and wire so that the pen contacted the paper in irregular intervals of frequency and irregular shapes. The result was not only that the pen made interesting shapes and drawings onto the paper as a byproduct of its unstable movement, but also that the contact microphone attached to the bottom of the paper recorded the audio from each strike of the pen, which then fed into my modular synthesis for processing. The end result in the sound score is a beating-sound similar to a heartbeat. The beating sound changed and became more or less regular or irregular with the speed at which I controlled the spinning DC motor. The score was finalized by using this sound in conjunction with other instruments and sounds I made in the modular synthesizer to produce what you hear in the score."

Created in collaboration with Bangkok City Ballet and DD Flection, LANDLOCKED was first performed in Thailand in 2020 during Jay Carlon’s creative residency at Bangkok 1899. As a site-adaptable work, LANDLOCKED is meant to position itself in direct relationship to the community in which it is performed. Sets and props used in Thailand were designed and built by Space Saloon, a nomadic design laboratory. Everything is created with recycled/upcycled materials and craft objects from locals.

LANDLOCKED takes inspiration from Jay’s multi-cultural experience as a first generation youth growing up in urban America, and speaks to the inherent trauma of being third culture in a migrant family.
