Natural Simulacra, 2024

2x @ 24” x 24” X 12”

    Using upcycled EPS foam originally
    destined for a landfill, this
    work examines the concept of
    simulating elements of nature
with a material that is currently
    destroying it.

    “Natural Simulacra I” was
    created with the intention of
    simulating elements of nature,
i.e. rock, water, with a material
    that is actively destroying it,
    namely EPS foam. These conceptual
aspects are placed in stark and
    jarring contrast to each other
in order to comment on the
    irrationality of human thought
    concerning our environment
    and future on this planet.
    The work considers a future
    where our natural environment
    is so compromised or otherwise
    inaccessible that our very ability
to view or experience it may
    only be through various
    simulations, whether
    digital or physical.
